Q Design and Play is one of the most unique brands from Thailand (and well, the world). It was created and established by the admiration for the product and clothing designs of two young blood designers,Praphat Somboonsitti and Ekkapoom Treechairusmee.
When you see brands like QDAP, you know straight away that they have a message, a purpose. This one isn’t just like any other brand. We got curious and asked Praphat himself:
I love drawing and designing since I was a child. I studied art and choose to study photography and graphic design for my bachelor’s degree. After I graduated, I started my career as a creative at Ogilvy and Mather. I believe that is my first inspiration of wanting to express my work and I choose to express it through the clothes. Then Q Design and Play was founded in year 2010 as an online graphic T-shirt store and after that we continuously expand our brand until today.
What does Q Design and Play mean to you?
It’s my life! All inspiration came from my childhood memory, my Art obbession and my fashion passion. Q came from my personal favorite alphabet, Design and Play came from brand’s motto which is We design, You play.
I didn’t want to work in fashion before. I just want to work in any kind of arts to communicate to other people but Ekkaphum always have passion about fashion then we met and blend our passion together.
What’s QDAP motto?
Our motto is “We Design, You Play” because we want our customers to play with our design pieces on their own way. And it’s key concept of our works in every collections.
My inspiration came from my childhood and my Art obbession and my fashion passion. It’s quite unique because they are all my private experience such as FW2014 collection “Weird Dream” is inspired from my memory when I was bullied in primary school. At that time I was such a geek and addict to manga then I had my own imaginary world and dream to portray in this collection. This collection I also dedicate to victims of bullying.
What type of men wears QDAP?
They have to be young at heart with a bit of sarcastic and sense of humor. People who love graphic design will love our clothes. Our design is the message that I would like to tell. Therefore, the people who choose to wear our clothes are also the message conveyor.
What audience (place) loves QDAP the most?
Mostly our customer are Asian people; Thailand, China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia.
Where would it be a dream to open a store?
NYC and Tokyo are my favourite cities! It would be great if we can open our store there!
I believe that where there is a will, there is a way.
Do you see yourselves designing for other brands, like Marc Jacobs did for Louis Vuitton?
I personally love KENZO and Opening Ceremony. If I can be part of those brands it would be my dream come true!
What are the biggest differences between the Asian and the European Fashion Markets? Do you feel misunderstood?
In my opinion, European Fashion Markets are more conservative and Black and White are preferable but Asian fashion markets are more fun and colorful.
What’s the most rewarding part of your brand?
When we knew that QDAP had its own fans! I mean we have royal customers who follow QDAP they wait to see what we are going to do next and they would like to be part of us for example we have activities for our customers to do DIY T-Shirt workshop and it was fully booked in just a day.
What has been your biggest achievement?
When we are accepted by customers and media. They trust in us and our story in every collection they knew what we try to communicate.
Will there be a women collection in the future? Please! 😉
My brand targets more on designing male clothes and I have never made any collections for female. However, it is so surprising that our clothes are also worn by female since we have many female customers. So maybe we are going to have womenswear collection in the future.
What can we expect next from QDAP?
Our vision is to be a worldwide brand from Thailand. We will start from strengthening the core of our brand, the manufacturing process and the quality. We also would like to be the pride of Thai people.
What’s your advice for young designers?
For young designers, they have to find themselves what they really are don’t try to be someone else. Before they create their work, they must begin with researching of what they are going to do not to find reference from other brand and copy.
